Gruman Watches, a micro brand based out of Switzerland, is a partnership between just two people. Consisting of a young watch enthusiast and designer, and an older industry veteran, they’ve taken it upon themselves to produce elegant watches for just a fraction of what bigger brands would sell for.

Gruman Sputnik GMT Blue

And now they’ve announced their first watch, the ‘Sputnik’, available now for preorder.

The Sputnik is available in either a ‘3hands’ style (hour, minute, seconds) or GMT. There’s several color variations for both: the 3hands comes in black or blue, and the GMT in black, blue, silver, and anthracite.

Of the options my preferred style is the 3hands blue.

It’s definitely an elegant looking watch, with an internal rotating timing bezel, a unique ‘riveted’ dial pattern, sapphire crystal on both the front and in the exhibition case back, and matching leather band ( a machined stainless steel bracelet is available for an extra $100).

And the Sputnik is still a proper dive watch, with 200 meters (660 feet) water resistance, screw down crown, and the excellent SuperLuminova C3 luminescent paint applied to the indexes and hands.

There is a significant price difference between the 3hands and the GMT, of $200. This seems to be due to the GMT needing the more expensive Sellita SW330-1 movement instead of the SW200-1. I don’t have a picture of it, but I hear the rotor will be decorated in the final version (photos are from a prototype).

So if you’re willing to take a bet on a new company, and are looking for a new mid-range spec’d diver, you could definitely do worse than the Sputnik. The 3hands model is priced at $390 with the GMT at $590. The Sputnik is supposed to ship mid-January 2018, and you can get your hands on one at Grumans site here.
