Seiko just released this news about teaming up with PADI (the Professional Association of Dive Instructors) to create two limited edition, PROSPEX brand dive watches.

PADI, originally founded just a few months after SEIKO released their first dive watches in 1965, is the world’s largest organization dedicated to diving instruction. I’m a PADI diver, and am currently going through the process of becoming a professional PADI instructor.

As part of the partnership, Seiko will be releasing two limited edition divers this autumn with PADI branding, the SRPA21K1 and the SUN065P1. The SRPA21K1 is powered by a mechanical automatic movement with manual winding, and the SUN065P1 uses Seikos proprietary Kinetic quartz movement.

If you haven’t come across it before, the Kinetic movement is like an automatic in that it charges the watch off of the movement of the wearers wrist, just charging a small battery instead of winding a mainspring.

Project Aware Support

Seiko and PADI’s partnership goes beyond just these two limited edition watches. Seiko also announced that they’d be supporting PADI’s Project Aware.

Project Aware is a global movement of SCUBA divers dedicated to preserving and protecting the marine environment. It’s unclear exactly how Seiko will be supporting the project, but one can assume some percent of sales will be going to the project.

The limited edition watches should be available for purchase sometime this autumn.
