Breitling just released news of what they describe as an ‘ocean pilot’, the Superocean 44 Special. Taking design cues from both divers and pilot watches, the Superocean 44 Special looks outstanding with its black and white style, which also helps maintain excellent legibility in all conditions.

The black steel case, black ceramic bezel, and black dial combine with oversized all white markings (backed up by a copious amount of luminous material) to create quite a stunning time-piece.

The Superocean 44 features Breitlings Caliber 17 automatic mechanical movement, with a 40hr+ power reserve. The caliber 17 is based on the popular workhorse movement, the ETA-2824-2, and has been officially chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute).

It can withstand a thousand meters (3,300ft) of crushing water pressure with its steel case, screw-locked crown and cambered sapphire crystal.

At 44mm case diameter, it’s by no means a small watch, but definitely not over-sized either. In fact, 44mm is pretty small for a diver with 1000m WR, as many in this range start edging up close to 50mm wide.

Breitling also put together this lovely video for the lunch of the Superocean Special:

The Breitling Superocean 44 Special should be available soon from your local Breitling dealer, for just under $5000 USD.
